Can ChatGPT Predict Football? GPT vs Claude vs Gemini on 1,190 Real Matches
Can ChatGPT predict football matches? We graded GPT, Claude, Gemini and 7 other AI models on 1,190 real matches. GPT picked 46% of results, Claude 51%, and all ten AIs together 62% when they agreed. Plus the best ChatGPT prompt for football predictions.
Can ChatGPT predict football matches? People ask it every weekend, usually by pasting "who wins Arsenal vs Chelsea, give me the correct score" into a chat box. We wanted a real answer, so since April 2026 we have asked GPT, Claude, Gemini and seven other AI models to predict every football match on TuringStats before kickoff, then graded each pick against the final score. This is what 1,190 matches show.
The short answer
Yes, ChatGPT can predict football, but no better than a careful fan, and not as well as other AI models. GPT-5.6 Luna, the GPT model on our panel, picked the right result in 46.2% of matches (550 of 1,190) and the exact score in 9.9%. That beats a random guess (33%), but only just beats always backing the home team (45%), and it trails the best AI on the panel by five points.
ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: who predicts football best?
- Claude Sonnet 5: 51.1% correct results, the best on the panel
- DeepSeek V4 Pro: 49.2%
- Gemini 3.8 Flash: 47.9% correct results and the most exact scores (11.3%)
- Grok 4.6: 47.7%
- GPT-5.6 Luna (ChatGPT): 46.2%, exact score 9.9%
The live ranking, updated after every result, is on the AI prediction leaderboard.
The bigger lesson is not which chatbot wins. It is that asking several AIs beats asking one. When all ten models picked the same result, they were right 62% of the time, a far stronger signal than any single model's pick.
Why ChatGPT's football predictions are often wrong
1. It may not know what happened this week
Unless it searches the web, a chatbot predicts from what it learned in training. It can miss injuries, suspensions, a new manager or last weekend's result, and it will still answer confidently. On TuringStats every model receives the same up-to-date form, table and head-to-head data before it predicts, which levels the field.
2. It is overconfident in the middle
When AI models said they were 55–65% sure, they were right only about 45–51% of the time. Their strongest calls were genuinely good: picks at 70% confidence or more were right about three times in four.
3. It loves the home team and low scores
The models backed the home side in 56% of matches, but home teams won 45%. They also predicted an average of 2.25 goals per match when the real average was 3.0, leaning heavily on 1-0, 1-1 and 2-1.
The best ChatGPT prompt for football predictions
If you want to use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini yourself, a good prompt makes a real difference. Give it facts and force it to be honest about uncertainty. Here is a prompt adapted from the one our panel uses:
You are a careful football analyst. Predict [Home team] vs [Away team] in [competition] on [date].
Facts: last 5 results for each team: [...]. League positions: [...]. Injuries and suspensions: [...]. Last 3 head-to-head results: [...].
Base rates: home teams win about 45% of matches, draws about 23%, away teams about 32%. Do not default to the home team.
Give: the most likely result (home, draw or away), the probability you honestly assign to it (stay near the base rate when the evidence is mixed; use 70%+ only for clear mismatches), one most likely exact score, and the two facts that drove your pick.
Three tips that matter more than wording:
- Paste the facts in. Don't trust the chatbot to know this week's team news.
- Ask for a probability, not a verdict. "60%" tells you far more than "Arsenal will win".
- Ask more than one AI. If ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini disagree, the match is genuinely open.
Skip the copy-paste: ask 10 AIs at once
Doing this by hand for every match is slow. On TuringStats, every fixture already shows what ten AI models predict, including GPT, Claude and Gemini, with each model's score and reasoning. Start with today's AI football predictions, or use Ask multiple AI at once to put your own question to all ten models, like whether a striker scores or which team finishes higher.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT predict football matches correctly?
Sometimes. In our graded record, the GPT model picked the right result 46% of the time and the exact score about 1 time in 10. Claude Sonnet 5 did better at 51%.
Can ChatGPT predict football scores?
It can suggest a likely score, but exact scores are rare for any predictor. The best AI in our data hit 11.3% of exact scores.
Which AI is best for football predictions?
Claude Sonnet 5 picks the most winners and Gemini 3.8 Flash the most exact scores. A unanimous call from all ten models is the strongest signal, right 62% of the time.
Is using ChatGPT for betting a good idea?
Treat any AI pick as a second opinion, not a guarantee. TuringStats is an AI research tool and does not give betting advice.
