Can AI predict the correct score of a football match?
Updated 22 October 2026
Rarely, and nobody can do it reliably. Across 1,485 graded football matches, the score picked by the most AI models was exactly right 10.4% of the time (154 matches); a single model's score prediction was right 9.6% of the time. That is roughly one match in ten, which is normal for exact scores: even the most likely score in a match rarely happens more than 10 to 15% of the time.
Why exact scores are so hard
A match has dozens of possible scorelines, and one late goal changes the answer. The useful part of a score prediction is the shape it describes: a tight 1-0 or 1-1 game versus an open 3-1.
Use the spread of scores instead

- Check goals markets built from the same predictions: over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
- For the result itself, the majority of models picked the right result 49.9% of the time across 1,444 matches.
Questions
What is the most common football score?
1-1 and 1-0 are the most common scorelines in top leagues.
Is ChatGPT good at predicting exact scores?
No AI is. GPT's single-model exact-score hit rate is in the same range as the other models; ten models agreeing on a result (62.4% right) is far more useful than any one exact score.
