Ballon d'Or 2026 Prediction: 10 AI Models Split Between Dembélé and Yamal
Who will win the 2026 Ballon d'Or? Asked the day before the ceremony, 5 of 10 AI models pick Ousmane Dembélé and 3 pick Lamine Yamal, but Yamal leads on podium points. Every model's top three and where they got facts wrong.
Short answer: asked on 25 October 2026, one day before the ceremony, 5 of 10 AI models picked Ousmane Dembélé to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, 3 picked Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappé and Fabián Ruiz got one vote each. Counting the full podium, Yamal edges it: he appears in the top three of 9 of the 10 models.
The 2026 Ballon d'Or is presented on Monday 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium (20:00 GMT), the first ceremony held outside France. It covers the 2025-26 season, including the 2026 World Cup.
How we asked
We asked ten AI models the same question at the same time: GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.6, DeepSeek V4 Pro, Qwen 3.8 Max, Mistral Medium 3.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3 and MiMo V2.6 Pro. Each named a winner, a second and a third, and gave a short reason. Every model received the official list of 30 nominees and the same verified facts: Paris Saint-Germain won the 2025-26 Champions League (beating Arsenal on penalties in the final, a second title in a row), Spain won the 2026 World Cup (1-0 after extra time against Argentina, Ferran Torres scoring), and Dembélé is the 2025 winner. The models saw no betting odds. No model saw another model's answer.
Ballon d'Or 2026: the AI vote for the winner
| Player | Votes to win | Models |
|---|---|---|
| Ousmane Dembélé (PSG) | 5 / 10 | GPT, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, MiMo |
| Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) | 3 / 10 | Claude, Gemini, Grok |
| Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid) | 1 / 10 | Mistral |
| Fabián Ruiz (PSG) | 1 / 10 | Qwen |
The full podium: Yamal is the most consistent pick
Scoring 3 points for a first place, 2 for second and 1 for third:
| Player | Points | In top 3 of |
|---|---|---|
| Lamine Yamal | 20 | 9 models |
| Ousmane Dembélé | 19 | 7 models |
| Kylian Mbappé | 6 | 4 models |
| Vitinha | 5 | 4 models |
| Ferran Torres | 4 | 3 models |
| Fabián Ruiz | 3 | 1 model |
| Vinícius Júnior | 2 | 1 model |
| Jude Bellingham | 1 | 1 model |
The split is the story of the season. The Dembélé voters weighed PSG's second straight Champions League most heavily; Kimi put it plainly, saying back-to-back Champions League titles "outweigh" Spain's World Cup win. The Yamal voters went the other way: Claude had him starring for the World Cup winners and edging out Dembélé, with Ferran Torres third for the goal that won the final. No model picked Harry Kane, Erling Haaland or Lionel Messi for the podium.
Every model's podium
| Model | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Luna | Dembélé | Yamal | Ferran Torres |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | Yamal | Dembélé | Ferran Torres |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | Yamal | Vitinha | Mbappé |
| Grok 4.6 | Yamal | Dembélé | Vitinha |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro | Dembélé | Yamal | Mbappé |
| Qwen 3.8 Max | Fabián Ruiz | Ferran Torres | Yamal |
| Mistral Medium 3.5 | Mbappé | Vinícius Júnior | Bellingham |
| Kimi K3 | Dembélé | Yamal | Vitinha |
| GLM 5.3 | Dembélé | Yamal | Mbappé |
| MiMo V2.6 Pro | Dembélé | Yamal | Vitinha |
Where the AI models got the facts wrong
Not every reason holds up, and we show the misses rather than hide them:
- Mistral backed Mbappé saying he "led PSG" to the Champions League. Mbappé plays for Real Madrid. It also credited Vinícius Júnior, a Brazil international, with Spain's World Cup win.
- Grok and MiMo described PSG's season as a "treble". We have only verified the Champions League and the French title, so treat that claim as unconfirmed.
- Qwen made the most original pick, Fabián Ruiz, on the basis that he won both the Champions League with PSG and the World Cup with Spain.
This is the same pattern we saw in our Europa League vote: language models are good at weighing achievements they are told about and weaker on current details they fill in from memory, such as who plays for which club. That is why the team picks here match the facts we supplied, while a few of the reasons do not.
Is the AI consensus likely to be right?
The panel is split, which usually means the outcome is genuinely open. Five of ten agreeing on Dembélé is a plurality, not a consensus, and a 20-to-19 points race between Yamal and Dembélé is as close as it gets. On single matches, picks where most models agree are right more often than split ones, but a jury vote like the Ballon d'Or is a different kind of question. We will add the result to this page after the ceremony and score every model. The full record of the same ten models on real matches is on the AI prediction leaderboard, and how we grade them is on the methodology page.
