Spain Head to World Cup 2026 Without a Single Real Madrid Player — For the First Time in History

Spain's World Cup 2026 squad makes history: for the first time in 16 tournaments, not a single Real Madrid player was named. Coach Luis de la Fuente's 26-man roster is dominated by Barcelona stars, with big calls on Dean Huijsen, Gavi's comeback, and more surprises.

A Historic First: Spain's World Cup Squad Has No Real Madrid DNA

For the first time in the nation's 16 World Cup appearances, Spain will compete in football's biggest tournament without a single player from Real Madrid. Head coach Luis de la Fuente announced his 26-man squad on May 25, 2026, ahead of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada — and the glaring absence of Los Blancos stars instantly made headlines worldwide.

From veteran captain Dani Carvajal to highly-touted young defender Dean Huijsen, every Real Madrid player was left out. Yet De la Fuente was unapologetic, dismissing any suggestion of bias — in either direction.

"I am the national team coach and I don't think about which club players come from," the 64-year-old said at the squad announcement in Madrid. "They are national team players. I don't have local biases like supporters do. The only thing I want is for players to feel proud to represent the national team."

Huijsen's Shock Omission — and the Men Who Took His Place

Perhaps the most surprising exclusion was Dean Huijsen, the 21-year-old centre-back who had been widely tipped to start in central defence. Instead, De la Fuente turned to Eric Garcia (Barcelona) and Marc Pubill (Atletico Madrid), backing both players on the strength of their form this season.

"Rather than talking about those who are absent, I want to explain why Eric Garcia and Pubill were called up," the coach said. "Everyone knows what they've done this season. We feel this is the right moment for them."

De la Fuente spoke with particular warmth about Garcia, a former pupil from his time coaching Spain's youth sides. "Eric worked with me at U19 and U21 level. I know him and I have no doubts whatsoever," said the coach who guided Spain to Euro 2024 glory. "For various reasons, he hasn't been part of the national team recently, but he is one of ours."

Pubill, 22, earned his place through versatility — capable of playing both as a centre-back and a full-back, a flexibility that De la Fuente views as invaluable across a gruelling World Cup campaign. Robin Le Normand was also left out of the defensive reckoning.

Barcelona 8, Real Madrid 0 — The Numbers Tell a Story

With eight players drawn from Camp Nou — Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal — Barcelona are by far the biggest club contributors to Spain's squad. Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo was blunt in its assessment, running the headline: "Barcelona have beaten Real Madrid 8–0."

De la Fuente, however, refused to frame the squad as a club rivalry. "They are national team players, full stop," he said when pressed on the Barcelona dominance.

Gavi's Emotional Return — and Yamal's Viral Moment

One of the most compelling storylines heading into the tournament is Gavi's return. The Barcelona midfielder, who spent an agonising stretch battling serious injury, has fought his way back to full fitness and will represent Spain at a World Cup for the first time since his breakout tournament in 2022.

"Gavi is loved by everyone. He brings so much — quality, versatility," De la Fuente said. "He is coming back and he will be at the World Cup. You can't ask for greater motivation than that."

The moment of Gavi's call-up was captured in a video posted by Lamine Yamal showing the midfielder in tears upon hearing the news. De la Fuente admitted it moved him deeply. "It shows their quality as human beings," he said. "That matters just as much as footballing talent. I'm glad to see Gavi emotional, because we know how much this means to him."

Pedri's Return, Goalkeeping Depth, and a Surprise Up Front

Pedri, who suffered a serious injury during Euro 2024, has also made the cut after an impressive club season. De la Fuente expressed confidence the midfielder could hit even greater heights at the World Cup. Creative midfielder Fermin Lopez, by contrast, misses out through injury.

In goal, the selection of Joan Garcia raised eyebrows, though De la Fuente was quick to defend the decision — and even turned the conversation on its head. "Why aren't we talking about Raya? I'm actually worried about him," he quipped when asked about the competition between Unai Simon and Joan Garcia. "Look at the three goalkeepers we have — any of them can start."

Up front, Victor Munoz is the most unexpected name. The 22-year-old striker, a product of Real Madrid's academy who now plays for Osasuna, earned his place through sheer effectiveness. "He brings pace, the ability to change the tempo of a game, and can play on either wing or through the middle," the coach said.

Both Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal were included despite carrying minor injuries. De la Fuente confirmed that medical staff from both club and country are working closely together, with the expectation that all 26 players will be fully fit before Spain's opening match against Cape Verde on June 15.

Spain's World Cup 2026 Schedule — Group Stage

Spain will assemble on May 30 at their Las Rozas base on the outskirts of Madrid before flying to the United States for their final preparations. Their group-stage schedule is as follows: June 15 vs. Cape Verde, June 21 vs. Saudi Arabia, and June 27 vs. Uruguay.

"We Believe We Can Win It"

De la Fuente made no attempt to play down expectations. The reigning European champions enter the tournament as one of the favourites, and their coach is fully embracing that pressure.

"We feel like title contenders. We believe we have what it takes to win the World Cup. But that guarantees nothing," he said. "So we will fight for everything."
