Hockey results Saturday 17 October 2026: AI predictions review
Hockey results Saturday 17 October 2026: the 10-model AI consensus went 10 of 12 across a busy NHL slate, missing Anaheim's home loss and Ottawa's defeat.
Twelve NHL games, ten frontier models and a consensus that landed 10 of 12 correct. Saturday 17 October 2026 was a strong night for the results desk's pre-match panel, with the models calling the winner in all but two of the twelve fixtures on the slate.
The biggest surprise came in Anaheim, where nine of ten models backed the Ducks at home against Boston. The Bruins won 4-2, handing the consensus one of its two misses on an otherwise clean evening. The other came in Philadelphia, where a unanimous Ottawa pick (100% of 10 models) was overturned by a 3-1 Flyers win.

Saturday's slate produced ten correct consensus calls from twelve fixtures.
Where the AI got it right
The panel was unanimous on Colorado, and it was justified. All ten models backed the Avalanche, with a most common score of 4-2 and average confidence of 59%. Colorado delivered a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh, getting the winner right and coming within a goal of the exact margin.
Tampa Bay was another unanimous call. Ten of ten models picked the Lightning, most commonly at 4-2, and the 4-2 win over Vancouver matched the modal scoreline exactly. Average confidence sat at 58%. Read the full reasoning on the Tampa Bay Lightning vs Vancouver Canucks prediction page.
Dallas was the third unanimous pick of the night, and the Stars produced the most emphatic result of the slate: a 4-0 shutout in Chicago. The models had leaned toward a 4-5 Dallas win at 58% average confidence, so the clean sheet was a bonus rather than a forecast. The Chicago Blackhawks vs Dallas Stars prediction had the right side of the result.
Winnipeg versus Carolina was tighter in the numbers but not on the night. Nine of ten models favoured the Hurricanes, most commonly at 3-4, and Carolina won 3-2 — the correct winner with the margin one goal off the modal call. The Winnipeg Jets vs Carolina Hurricanes prediction stood up well.
Montreal and Detroit were also unanimous, and both landed. The Canadiens beat Buffalo 4-3, matching the most common predicted score exactly, while the Red Wings beat San Jose 4-3, likewise hitting the modal scoreline. The Montreal Canadiens vs Buffalo Sabres prediction and the Detroit Red Wings vs San Jose Sharks prediction both called it right.
Where it got it wrong
The Anaheim miss was the more notable of the two. Nine of ten models backed the Ducks, most commonly at 4-3, with average confidence of 58%. Boston won 4-2 instead, so the consensus not only had the wrong winner but was two goals away from its modal scoreline. The Anaheim Ducks vs Boston Bruins prediction was a clear miss on the panel's most confident non-unanimous call of the night.
Philadelphia was the harder one to absorb. Every one of the ten models picked Ottawa, most commonly at 2-3, and average confidence was 58%. The Flyers won 3-1, meaning a unanimous consensus was overturned. That result alone accounts for one of the two misses on a night when unanimity otherwise held up in Colorado, Tampa Bay, Dallas, Detroit and Montreal.
Models of the day
Six models finished on 10 of 12: GPT-5.6 Luna, DeepSeek V4 Pro, Qwen 3.8 Max, MiMo V2.5 Pro, Grok 4.6 and Kimi K3. Each missed only the Anaheim and Philadelphia calls, matching the headline consensus record exactly.
GLM 5.3 finished just behind on 9 of 12. Claude Sonnet 5 and Gemini 3.8 Flash both ended on 8 of 12, while Mistral Medium 3.5 trailed the field on 7 of 12. The spread of three correct calls between the best and worst models is a reminder that consensus agreement does not guarantee consensus accuracy — the two misses were shared by nearly the whole panel.
